February 1933. A year and a half after he has solved the case of Geli Raubal, former police commissioner Siegfried Sauer lives under a different name in Wien, hiding from Adolf Hitler, who in the meanwhile has been named German Chancellor. Rosa Weiss, the anti-Nazi spy with whom he had fallen in love in Munich, tried to convince him they must go back and fight the Nazis, but he does not believe in armed resistance, so she has gone without him, leaving Sauer alone to confront his demons.

One day, though, his past comes knocking to his door: sergeant Karl Julian, also a member of antiNazi resistance, asks Sauer to help him find Rosa, who has disappeared in Berlin while preparing a demonstrative action in order to attract the world’s eyes on German politics. Julian has no idea whether Rosa is still alive, nor if her plan is already in motion. Only Sauer can find out and intervene before it is too late. To do so, he will have to leave his safe house in Wien and head
straight into the enemy’s lair in Berlin. What he does not know is the Nazis are also planning a decisive blow to the Weimar Republic: the attack to the German Parliament which will become famous as the «Reichstag Fire». Can Sauer discover it in time and limit the damage?

The Demons of Berlin is a hectic, nail-biting thriller set in the glittering Berlin of the Thirties, during the last days of democracy before Hitler gained full powers. A private investigation intertwining with one of 20th century’s capital events, which gets shown from the inside for the first time in fiction, in search for answers and justice. What did really happen in the Reichstag on the evening of February 27, 1933? Was the fire a mere accident, the effect of a lone man’s folly or a strategic step in a wider Nazi plot? And what would have changed if flames did not burn the building, causing the fall of the Weimar Republic and the rise of the Third Reich?

Based on extensive historical research and a detailed reconstruction of the locations and atmosphere of the Weimar metropolis, The Demons of Berlin drags the reader into a vortex of mysteries, twists and growing revelations, while its characters strive to avoid the worst, risking all they love in the name of freedom.
