Xu Zechen is a Chinese author and also an editor at People’s Literature magazine. He published his first stories as a graduate student while studying at the country’s prestigious department of Chinese at Peking University, and has since gone on to publish several novels and countless short stories, which have been published in The Guardian, Words Without Borders and Comma Press’ collection of Chinese short stories Shi Cheng: Short Stories from Urban China.
He has been receiving increasing international attention, taking part in writing events across Europe and also attending the Iowa International Writer’s Program in 2010. In 2011, Zechen was selected among the People’s Literature “Future 20”, in which critics, journalists and leading figures from the publishing industry voted for the twenty best writers under 41. In 2017, he was chosen by John Freeman as one of thirty authors for inclusion in Freeman’s: The Future of New Writing.
