Padraic X. Scanlan

Padraic X. Scanlan is an historian of labour, enslaved and free, in Britain and the British empire. He is Associate Professor in the Centre for Industrial Relations and the Centre for Diaspora & Transnational Studies at the University of Toronto. His most recent book, Rot: An Imperial History of the Irish Famine is forthcoming from Robinson (UK) and Basic Books (USA) in 2025. He is also the author of Freedom’s Debtors: British Antislavery in Sierra Leone in the Age of Revolution (Yale, 2017), and Slave Empire: How Slavery Built Modern Britain (Robinson, 2020). He is researching and writing A Day’s Work, a history of labour in nineteenth-century imperial Britain, for Profile Books. He lives in Toronto with his family.
