Madeleine Pelling

Madeleine Pelling is an art and cultural historian specialising in eighteenth-century Britain. She holds a PhD from the University of York and has held research fellowships at the universities of Yale, Edinburgh, Manchester and the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art. Her research focuses on histories of collecting, archaeology and graffiti, as well as the early modern period onscreen in TV and film. She has written for BBC History Extra, History Today and The Conversation, and appeared as a guest on numerous podcasts to discuss topics including race and #MeToo in period drama, the history of museums and the role of technology in exploring the past. She is a co-host of the Travelling Sisterhood of Art Historians podcast, co-convenes the global seminar series New Directions in Eighteenth- and Nineteenth-Century Art, and is an early career member of the Royal Historical Society. Her first book will be published by Profile in 2024.
