Authors

Eileen Chang (1920-1995) was born in Shanghai and studied literature at the University of Hong Kong. She returned to Shanghai in 1941 during the Japanese occupation, where she established her reputation as a writer, before moving to the United States in 1955. A giant of modern Chinese literature, as celebrated for her short stories as her novels, she was known for her tales of love, longing, and the emotional intricacies of family life, though she was also scathingly anti-Communist at times. In 2007, her novella Lust, Caution was adapted for film by Ang Lee, winning the Golden Lion award at the Venice Film Festival.
