Cat Irving

Cat Irving has been the Human Remains Conservator for Surgeons’ Hall in Edinburgh since 2015 in and has been caring for anatomical and pathological museum collections for over twenty years. A licensed anatomist, she began by removing brains and sewing up bodies at the Edinburgh City Mortuary. Following training at the Royal College of Surgeons of England she worked at the Hunterian Museum at Glasgow University, where she is now Consultant Human Remains Conservator.

Cat gives regular talks on anatomy and medical history and has spoken across the UK, US and Europe at a wide variety of universities and museums. She has been published extensively academically and has contributed to various publications including the Routledge Handbook of Museums, Heritage and Death. Cat can frequently be found as a guest on podcasts and radio, talking about subjects relating to death and the human body.  Her first book, Conversations with the Dead, will be published by HarperCollins in 2028. She lives in Edinburgh.
