Rachael Sharples
Prior to working in publishing, Rachael studied English Literature at the University of Brighton, before going on to complete a Masters in English Literature at Université Paris Diderot and the University of Massachusetts. Rachael joined the agency in 2015, having previously worked in the foreign rights department at another major literary agency. She handles French-language rights and is looking for new and established authors writing in French.
She is looking for completely fresh voices, in terms of subject matter, style, and background. In fiction, she is looking for books with a strong sense of time and place, and hopes to be taken on unexpected journeys across these settings. She enjoys finding the inexplicable in the ordinary, often, with a touch of humour or playfulness, and wants to meet characters who encourage us to examine the depths of human consciousness. She does not read fantasy, sci-fi, or very commercial, genre-led fiction.
In non-fiction, she is a keen reader of biographical narratives about exceptional people and investigative true crime. She is also eager to discover well-written, cultural and social histories which offer something new in looking at and improving the world around us.
