Yarrow Townsend shortlisted for 2023 Branford Boase Award

27th April, 2023

Yarrow Townsend has been shortlisted for the 2023 Branford Boase Award for her middle grade adventure THE MAP OF LEAVES alongside her editor Rachel Leyshon at Chicken House.

The awards were founded in 2000 to celebrate the author of the year’s outstanding debut novel for children as well as highlighting the editor of the novel. Forming an all-female list, eight shortlistees have been chosen from a longlist of twenty-one, including The Cats We Meet Along the Way, by Nadia Mikail, edited by Bella Pearson and The Eternal Return of Clara Hart by Louise Finch, edited by Siobhàn Parkinson.

So far, the judges have said:

‘mesmerising’; ‘a great approach to green issues but it is full of themes that will work for readers of different ages’; ‘Orla is rude and disparaging, she feels like a character we haven’t met before’; ‘This is an author who will do something really unusual again’

The winner of the award will be announced at a central London ceremony held on the 13th of July 2023.
