Sergei Lukyanenko was born in Kazakhstan, then a republic of the Soviet Union. He entered the Alma-Ata (Kazakhstan) Medical University in 1985, where he began to write science fiction and his first books were published. Though he still completed his medical course, Sergei realised that he would never work as a doctor. In 1997 Sergei moved to Moscow. Since then Sergei has had at least two books published a year. Many became bestsellers and won science fiction awards. His books The Night Watch and The Day Watch were released as films in 2004 and 2006 respectively. Sergei’s books have been translated into more than twenty languages and continue to be hugely popular.
