Count Miklós Bánffy de Losoncz (1873-1950) was a Hungarian diplomat, nobleman and novelist. An influential politician in his day, rising to the post of foreign minister and orchestrating the coronation of Karl, the last King of Hungary, in 1916, he is best remembered today for his Transylvanian Trilogy, also known as The Writing on the Wall, a sweeping and expansive tale of the decline and fall of the Hungarian nation before the First World War, comprised of the novels They Were Counted, They Were Found Wanting, and They Were Divided. The trilogy was suppressed by the Communist regime in Hungary until 1982, when a reissue was permitted, and not translated into English until 1999.
